New Z900RS owner - New rider in Pittsburgh, PA
« on: April 16, 2019, 08:54:49 PM »
In 1976 my father purchased a new brown and orange KZ900. I fell in love with that bike and have wanted one ever since. Unfortunately my path through life didn't allow that to happen. When Kawasaki brought out the new Z900RS I fell  in love all over and now that I am able, I thought what the hell, I'm getting one! Since I never got around to learning to ride, my son who has been riding for years (currently on a Ducati 959 Panagale) test rode the bike and brought it home for me. Now he's teaching me to ride so that we can get out into the wind together. I'm really enjoying the bike and I've got 43 years of catching up to do. So glad I did this. Anyway, love the forum, I have gotten a ton of great info and advice so far. Thanks!

Welcome aboard "Papa"!
I'm a Pennsylvanian too, about 250 miles east of you. And, I reckon there's <10 of us here in the Keystone state according to the nifty locator map feature installed on this site.
Man, your story sounds so similar to mine, except it was most of my buddies that went to work after high school & all had Zeds while I went to college & was broke.
Anyway, so here we are years later, proud owners of the legendary Zed at last. Ya! I've had a bunch of bikes so I can tell you you will not be disappointed.
Since you mentioned this is your 1st bike, just some friendly advice. Please be careful. This is a serious machine. I would strongly suggest you take every professional rider course you can find in your area. I have & they really do make a difference. Motorcycling well is a learned skill over time. Sorry- End of lecture  :001:
Anyway best of luck & enjoy your new toy. I'm sure you will love it.

Your local community college should have a 'motorcycle safety course' for a reasonable fee and weekend of your time. No offense intended toward the boy, but unless he's a naturally born teacher, he's likely to overlook things. The same facility has what they call the 'experienced rider course'. I can't say whether the beginner course would have sufficient merit for you (I do routinely get comments from "seasoned" riders who take the 'basic' class and comment at how much they learned) but the ERC is a definite must-do and is only 1 day last I checked. Have your kid take it too. He'll probably be surprised how much better he is at the conclusion.

I appreciate all of the advice on taking the motorcycle safety course, and I will be taking it.  Right now they are booking almost a year in advance. My son did take the course and that was the condition for me allowing him to purchase a  motorcycle in the first place. The school parking lot where it is taught is only 10 minutes from my house, and that is where I’ve been practicing. He has been instructing me on what he learned in the course and I have been riding their painted course  in the parking lot.   It’s going very well and I am getting better every day.
